In the past, tertiary education was not widely recognized among students and parents. Limited access to information and awareness platforms meant many young people viewed university as the sole pathway to success. However, a significant shift has occurred in recent years, bringing alternative educational pathways to the forefront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One commendable initiative in this regard is organizing school-wise visits to technical training centers. And also providing students with firsthand vocational education experience. Recently, students and teachers from Mad\/M.May\/Mahizhavattuvan Maha Vidyalaya visited the Vivekananda College of Technology (VCOT). This visit was instrumental in introducing them to the world of Tertiary Vocational Education<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) Framework, and the relevance of soft skills in shaping the industries of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students face significant academic pressure due to misconceptions that losing university opportunities signifies a ruined future. This mindset often leads to harsh parenting practices, which can push students toward severe psychological distress, including depression and anxiety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some students resort to extreme measures like self-harm or suicide due to the perceived failure of not meeting traditional expectations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vocational education presents an alternative that not only aligns with a student’s personality and skills but also provides practical training. This system offers a viable pathway to personal and professional growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By embracing this option, students can thrive in careers tailored to their strengths, alleviating the unnecessary stress of repeated attempts at high-ranking exams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing Academic Pressure and Suicide Rates
Sri Lanka\u2019s suicide rate, approximately 15 per 100,000 people, is alarmingly higher than the global average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among youth aged 17-25, particularly young women, academic pressure emerges as a dominant cause of mental health issues and suicide attempts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initiatives like the VCOT school visits aim to address this crisis by highlighting that success isn’t limited to traditional academic pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exposure to vocational education emphasizes that learning practical, industry-relevant skills is equally valuable. It encourages students and parents to view this as a respectable and rewarding option, fostering a healthier perspective on success and career planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paving the Way for a Brighter Future
Programs like those at VCOT play a pivotal role in reshaping societal norms surrounding education and career success. By providing students with insights into diverse opportunities and equipping them with essential life skills, vocational education not only bridges the gap in awareness but also supports mental well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us continue to advocate for such initiatives, ensuring a future where every student finds a path that aligns with their aspirations, skills, and potential. Together, we can reduce academic pressure, combat stigma, and empower the next generation to thrive in their unique capacities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
